James D. Weatherspoon

Powell Funeral Home, Southern Pines, NC

1. What is your experience and business history?

I have am a licensed funeral director since 1969.  I attended the first crematory training class offered in NC.  I have since attended five more schools, and one crematory operator managers school.

2. Why did you decide to run for the Crematory Authority?

There are several issues that need updating in the crematory regulations plus I think that a hands on crematory manager is needed on the Authority.

3. What are the issues you face as a funeral director/crematory operator?

As a crematory manager, I find that most funeral homes that do not own a crematory have difficulty understanding the laws pertaining to the authorization form.

4. With cremation on the rise, what concerns or changes do you see on the horizon for funeral service?

I see a great need for all in funeral service to keep abreast of the ever changing trends on the cremation end of funeral service.

5. Other comments you may have that were not addressed in the preceding questions.

There needs to be some changes made to the death certificate to better serve the crematory operators.
