Jason L. Benton

Brunswick Funeral Service, Shallotte, NC

1. What is your experience and business history?

I have been employed with Brunswick Funeral Service since 1996. I started out part-time and went to full time status in 1999. I attended and graduated from FTCC obtaining my Funeral Service License in 2002. My career also involves becoming a Certified Funeral Celebrant in 2001, serving on the CANC Board of Directors from 2004-2006, & becoming a member of the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice.

2. Why did you decide to run for the Crematory Authority?

While being a Crematory Operator and serving with the CANC board, I developed an interest in Cremation Rules & Regulations along with making sure our cremation families received the trust that they were due and needed.

3. What are the issues you face as a funeral director/crematory operator?

The issues I feel that are at hand daily as a FD is that the public is not being educated on the cremation services and/or choices that they can receive from a funeral home. I deal with families coming in thinking that cremation is an “immediate disposition” only.

As a crematory operator, I feel the established rules and regulations are self explanatory.

4. With cremation on the rise, what concerns or changes do you see on the horizon for funeral service?

When demand is increasing on any service or product we have to ask, are we prepared for this increase? Is our staff getting the training that they need? Again going back to if we educate our families are we equipped to handle their request? We have to prepare ourselves for this increase in every aspect of our profession.

5. Other comments you may have that were not addressed in the preceding questions.

Cremation is here and it is staying! Cremation no longer brings the fear that it once did. I feel that is due to the fact of what our Board, our Authority, and our Associations have done to prepare us. It is all about communicating & educating.
