Cecil M. Burton

Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home, Shelby, NC

1. What is your experience and business history?

My family has been in the funeral home business since 1914. I am a third generation funeral director and owner with over thirty years experience and presently own my own crematory.

2. Why did you decide to run for the Crematory Authority?

The need to be an advocate for my fellow crematory owners and operators when issues arise.

3. What are the issues you face as a funeral director/crematory operator?

Crematory operators are increasingly exposed to liability issues with regards to who can sign the authorization form.   With more and more families being split or non-existent, we need more specific instruction to protect the crematory operator and owners.

4. With cremation on the rise, what concerns or changes do you see on the horizon for funeral service?

As cremation rates rise, we will see more regulations trying to be passed, some to our advantage and some not.  Therefore we will need to keep a close eye on these issues.

5. Other comments you may have that were not addressed in the preceding questions.

A major concern that we have is when someone is being cremated and we have to wait for the death certificate to be signed, sometimes this can take several days or longer.   Which in itself, creates problems for the family of  the deceased in the planning of services.
